PENNY HEWSON

Penny Hewson is a multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne. She plays guitar, mandolin, viola, harmonica, piano and organ
Hewson was a member of Sea Stories an Indie pop / Folk rock band from Melbourne. They existed from 1986 until their break up in 1993. They released 2 full length albums and a number of EP's.

Simon Honisett (former member of Sea Stories) and Penny Hewson re-emerged in 1994 as acoustic duo Sunglass. The duo issued the ‘Sunglass’ album (April 1994) and the CD EP `When Stars Collide' (June). Sunglass issued a new single, `How Long Can You Stay Angry?' in July 1995. At the same time Honisett and Hewson launched four-piece outfit Gigantaur to cater to their guitar pop tastes, releasing the single `On a Rocket'/`Trailer Trash' and CD EP Gigantaur (July 1995).
Hewson released her debut solo album ‘Me’ in 1998 on her own label Wasabi Records. Hewson then relocated to Los Angeles where she played in a short lived band called My Zuko. After living there for a decade, Hewson returned to Melbourne and released her second solo album ‘It’s An Endless Desire’ on Popboomerang Records in August 2012.
It's an Endless Desire, began to make itself heard during her last years in LA, but it was completed and recorded in her flat. ''These songs brought me back home,'' it says in the fine print.
They travelled in style, what's more, after 10 years in a successful dotcom career. ''There is no pressure on this record to sell,'' Hewson says. ''I don't owe people money. That was my greatest freedom. I had worked hard to earn that money so I could do whatever I wanted to do with it.''

Needless to say, pennyhewsonmusic.com ensures her new album has a very stylish and thorough web presence. But, she confesses, she's still torn between the thrilling possibilities of LA and the room for introspection that her home town affords.

When all is blogged and uploaded, are some playing fields still more level than others? ''There are less obstacles now,'' she says, ''but you still need to have that drive. Things move a bit slower here. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Here is an easier place for me to hear that inner voice. But I don't know that my friends in LA will even have time to really hear this album.''
