GAYE BROWN

Gaye Brown was a bass player, vocalist and keyboardist in the 60s and 70s. She began her career in a little family folk group from Clevedon in South Auckland which evolved into a progressive rock unit in Australia at the end of the '60s, before heading to London where it was groomed for international stardom by Warner Brothers.

As the Clevedonaires, then The Cleves and finally as Bitch, the unit released a total of ten singles, two EPs, and one album. A second album recorded by Warners in the UK was never released but a "best of" compilation covering the wide-ranging career of the Kiwi band was released.

Noted Australian rock historian Ian McFarlane likened Gaye Brown's vocal styling to those of Julie Driscoll and at times even Janis Joplin.
