Shirley Barrett (born 1961) was an Australian film director and screenwriter. Her film Love Serenade won the Caméra d'Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. She is also best known for her films Walk the Talk (2000) and South Solitary (2010), both of which she wrote and directed. Shirley’s script for South Solitary was awarded multiple prizes including the Queensland Premier’s Prize and the West Australian Premier’s Prize.
After high school Shirley Barrett drifted into a liberal arts program at Melbourne University but dropped out after two years and became a singer and songwriter for a band called the Fruit Pastilles. This band won a spot on a 3XY compilation of new Aussie bands called "Undiscovered" (ELPS 4322) in 1982. Epic released it on a single and they made it onto Countdown. In March 2022, she wrote about her battle with terminal cancer. Shirley Barrett died in Sydney on 3 August 2022, aged 61
