FAY WHITE

 

Fay White is a singer, songwriter and community arts facilitator whose work celebrates the power of singing to bring people together. Her album 'Did You See the Wind Today?' was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Children’s Album in 1989, and she has recorded or produced around a dozen albums, about half of them for children. Fay performs in a wide range of settings, both as a solo artist and as part of Songs with Legs, a duo with singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jane Thompson. Her more recent recordings include 'These People This Place: Everyday Grace', a retrospective album, as well as an introductory 'Songs with Legs' CD with Jane.

Community participation is central to Fay’s work. She has been songwriter-in-residence for community arts projects, including a project with the Grampians-Gariwerd community in Victoria following the 2006 bushfires. That collaboration resulted in six new songs, a community choir and an album. Fay has also worked in schools as a “Song Rhymer”, helping to make classroom singing a natural part of children’s everyday experience while supporting language, literacy and cooperative learning. Together with arranger Wendy Rowlands, she produced Alive and Singing, a songbook collection of contemporary Australian songs for choirs.
