Nina Raye, born Nina Adams in Lerup, Philippines, in 1936, arrived in Australia in December 1941. She began her professional career as a dancer at Sydney’s Celebrity Club in York Street in 1952, before working as a soubrette at the Roosevelt in Potts Point from 1952 to 1953. Raye began singing professionally at the Chequers nightclub, where she performed from 1953 until 1961. During this period, she also recorded a number of singles and established herself as a familiar performer on the Australian entertainment scene. In 1962, she married renowned disc jockey Lyal Richardson. Raye also appeared on popular Australian television programs including Bandstand and Six O'Clock Rock. Her career proved remarkably enduring, and she continued performing on the nightclub circuit into the 1990s.
