CATHY HARLEY


Cathy Harley born in 1959 is a jazz composer and performer. She studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for an Associate Diploma in Jazz Studies, and her teachers have included Mike Nock, Roger Frampton, Benny Green and Jimmy Smith. She was accepted to study with Ellis Marsalis and Kenny Barron in 1996.

Harley has been the recipient of a number of awards for her jazz compositions and performances, including an Australia Council Grant to record her original compositions to lyrics by Kate Swadling, the Jazz Action Society Composition Award (1994 and 1995), and second place in the National Piano Contest held at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 1992. She has also made a number of recordings with such performers as Jackie Orszascky, and the African band Bu Baca (with whom she recorded two CDs). Cathy Harley has performed with a number of groups, including her own ensembles (the Cathy Harley Trio and Quintet), Improviso, the Kate Swadling Quintet; and with such performers as Dale Barlow, Mike Nock, Don Burrows, George Golla, and Margaret Urlich.
